Meeting Minutes, January 13, 2014

January 13, 2014

In attendance:

Susan Ardizzoni, Chris Barrett, Michelle Cullinane, Jim Fagan, Mark Ferri, Donna Hegan, Karen McGarrahan, Beverly Merritt, Len Morrison, Dennis Rogers, Kevin Smith, Lisa Whelan
Absent: Mike Tetrault
he meeting began with prayer and reflection led by Fr. Paul.

Fr. Paul provided a document from the Archdiocese on The Role of the Parish Pastoral Council in the new Collaborative model.  The group reviewed and briefly discussed the document.  In discussing the organization of the council, Father noted that while he will function as chair of the council, the election of a Vice-Chair was necessary.  The Vice-Chair, in consultation with the Pastor, develops the agenda for each PPC meeting and should moderate each meeting.  Additionally, Father suggested that a member of the PPC take on the role of secretary.

The PPC discussed the role of Vice-Chair and unanimously elected Chris Barrett.  Susan Ardizzoni volunteered to act as secretary of the PPC.

The group then focused their time on the topic of Evangelization and the conversation went in a variety of directions, noted below:

  • Holy Thursday and Easter Vigil schedule – Fr. Paul and Fr. Tony are concerned about resources being stretched during this time.  A variety of suggestions were made and discussed including holding only one Easter Vigil.  If so, SMG would host Holy Thursday and OLA the Easter Vigil (in part because the 7 RCIA candidates are all from OLA).  There was a strong voice of concern that one Easter Vigil might be too crowded; however, it was noted because of the later date in April (which also falls on the first weekend of April school vacation week), the mass will not start until after sunset which may mean a lighter crowd.  The suggestion was also made to set up a screen in the church basement for a remote transmission. There was going to be some effort made to look at past attendance numbers for the Easter Vigil.
  • Catholic Schools Week – planned for January 26 through February 2, the primary goal is to raise awareness of Catholic education.  The masses for both weekends would include OLA students (in school uniforms) involved in the liturgy in a variety of ways.  A second collection will go toward the financial aid fund at OLA.
  • Miscellaneous ideas
    • Explore a way to put videos (homilies, testimonials, etc) on the website of FB page.
    • Invite the local newspaper to any event held at either parish or the school.
    • The Men’s Spirituality Group at SMG under the leadership of Chris Barrett and John DeBello planned to begin meeting in early February and would like to include men from OLA.
    • Donna Hegan mentioned Cursillo Weekend planned by St. Basil’s parish in Methuen as a very worthwhile experience.
    • The ARISE program, organized by Donna Hegan, will occur.  She volunteered to help any OLA parishioner with information and materials on how to begin this program at OLA.
    • General question to ponder – How do we bring people back who left after the Collaborative came into being
    • What happened to the collations after mass at SMG?  Can they get started again?
    • Ministry Questions
      • Colin’s time has been consumed by the Confirmation program; we need to find some relief for him.
      • A need for lector/Eucharistic ministers (altar servers?) exists at both parishes.
    • General Comments/concerns
      • Communication in both parishes needs to improve in some ways.

Next meeting – Wednesday, February 12, 2014
